An Update on Our Network of Sites

I wanted to take a few moments to provide an update on what's been happening with our network of sites - Web Directory Reviews Org, WDR Directory of Directories, and the Web Directory Forum.

About a month ago, on April 30 or thereabouts, the WDR Directory of Directories crashed. After spending a few days going back and forth with the tech support people at my hosting company, I decided it wasn't going to go anywhere and changed hosts, since I didn't see a point in rebuilding on a server that crashed for reasons they were unable to elaborate on. As with many things, some good came out of it although it certainly didn't feel like it at the time.

On the positive side, although I liked to the look and feel of the qlWebDS Pro directory script that I was using, it seemed that the creator had walked away from it, providing no updates and not responding to inquiries. While I wasn't inclined to willingly take on the task of recreating everything in another script, the crash took that decision out of my hands. I had to recreate it, and I wasn't about to rebuild on the same script I had been using. I also decided to change hosts, since Dreamhost gets more unreliable every year.

On the negative side, the directories were down entirely for a couple of weeks, and I have only recently completed the restoration. Fortunately, between the Internet Archive and Google cache, I didn't have to go out looking for the directories that had previously been listed, and I was able to copy and paste most of the text that was lost.

For the past few months, I have had a copy of DirectoryPress, a PremiumPress product that operates on a WordPress platform, that I had bought for another project that I never got around to starting, so I used that. There were some frustrating moments, and I learned that there is really no point in wasting time asking for help from PremiumPress's tech support; they reply in good time, but they don't know the answers to anything. Some good folks in their support forum, who were actually using the script, were able to help me through some of the tough spots, and I had to figure a lot of it out on my own. PremiumPress does have some useful support videos that I made use of. Someone with a good working knowledge of WordPress would probably have had a much easier time of it than I did but, other than a couple of blogs that I never kept up with, I had never done much in WordPress before.

WDR Directory of Directories

The WDR Directory of Directories has been restored, and I have added quite a lot of new stuff to it. It isn't everything that I would like it to be yet, but I don't think it sucks too badly. As I learn my way around it, I'll be adding and changing things, but the content is there, and I am pleased with it. Please look over it and let me know what you think.

WDR Directory of Directories of Directories

Some time back, I had created the WDR Directory of Directories of Directories as a bit of a joke, and an excuse to play around with a very old free directory script. Being on the same server, it had crashed too, which is why I knew that Dreamhost's tech support was lying to me when they tried to blame the third-party software, since it's unlikely that two different scripts would have crashed on the same day.

Anyhow, I had created the WDR Directory of Directories of Directories as a lark, with the idea that directories of directories needed directories too, but I have recreated it as well, also using a DirectoryPress script, but giving it a different look. Its slogan is, "We list the sites that list the sites that list the sites." Take a look at it too, if you would.

Web Directory Reviews Org

Given this extra load of work that I hadn't planned into my days, plus having to earn a living, I have gotten behind on Web Directory Reviews Org; I haven't done a web directory review in a while, but I'll still finish up the second quarter on time. I'll have a new review up soon.

Each quarter, Web Directory Reviews Org assesses twenty web directories, rating them, and compiling a list of the ten best directories at the end of the quarter. The following quarter, the ten best directories from the previous quarter compete with ten different directories, sometimes using a different assessment criteria. So far this quarter, I have reviewed nine directories, all in April. Six of them were directories that had not been assessed last quarter, and the other three were ones that were rated in the top ten from the previous quarter. I have eleven more to do this quarter, and just over a month to do it. That shouldn't be any problem. The next one will probably be one of the top ten directories from last quarter since I still have seven of them to do, and only four more new ones. I believe Directory Journal is next in line, since I am trying to take them in same order they were done last quarter.

Web Directory Forum

As you may know, it is very difficult to get a new discussion forum going. We were getting some new members and conversation was flowing reasonably well at the time that my server crashed. Unfortunately, with all of the time that I have had to spend rebuilding the two directories, some of that time was taken away from the forum, and things have gotten very slow there.

We had a couple of good threads going, and they could restart again at any time. One was about the Open Directory Project, and the other one was about Dreamhost. Interestingly, I don't think I started either of those threads but they attracted a few new members, who not only registered for accounts but participated in the conversation.

Please, if you get a chance, pop over to the Web Directory Forum. If you haven't already registered for an account there, please do so. Once you have an account there, join in on any discussions that interest you. If you don't see anything that interests you, start a thread about something you want to talk about. Even when I don't necessarily have time to think up topics, I can generally find time to reply to posts, but there are others who come there to, who are far more inclined to join in on a conversation than they are to start one.

If you own or are associated with a directory, you should know that anyone who is an active participant in the forum can get a one hundred percent discount coupon for a featured listing in the WDR Directory of Directories. You can find more about that in a forum thread, or write me to ask about it.

I wanted to take a few moments to let you know what's going on, and I guess that's about it. Thanks for listening.
